Meditating on the Humility of our Lord
Philippians 2:1-11 -
If, then, there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any communion of spirit, if any compassion and pity, fill my joy full, that you may be mutually disposed, having mutual love, joined in soul, being disposed to one thing — nothing according with faction, nor yet according with vainglory -- but with humility, deeming one another superior to one's self, not each noting that which is his own, but each that of others also.
For let this disposition be in you, which is in Christ Jesus also, Who, being inherently in the form of God, deems it not pillaging to be equal with God, nevertheless empties Himself, taking the form of a slave, coming to be in the likeness of humanity, and, being found in fashion as a human, He humbles Himself, becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore, also, God highly exalts Him, and graces Him with the name that is above every name, that in the name of Jesus every knee should be bowing, celestial and terrestrial and subterranean, and every tongue should be acclaiming that Jesus Christ is Lord, for the glory of God, the Father. * * * His humility begets His exaltation. The word humility is “MAKE-LOW” in Greek. It is used figuratively in Luke to describe the mountains being “made humble,” or metaphorically, the earth humbling herself, in preparation for the millennial kingdom. But it is used here so deeply… connecting the critical character of our Lord and His God to the story at hand. WHY was CHRIST the One Who could be sacrificed for the sake of all? Why was HIS a “just” walk? Because He obeys His Father (Rom. 5:19,) the many shall be constituted “just.” The obedience of the Son — in the face of all opposition, thus in ALL humility, the Highest being, literally, made lowest, into these bodies of humiliation — is why (“wherefore”) God highly exalts Him, and gives Him ALL. The Christians say that God is love, but He is also just. They are right! What could be MORE just than a loving Father giving His Son all He suffered for? He begins with us — hence the first 4 verses in the section. It’s not that we are entreated to “be perfect,” for God ALREADY sees us as holy and flawless (“WATCHING is not SEEING, Girl.” - Syrio Forel, the First Sword of Bravos. Also Eph. 1:4-5.)Yes -- God has the pleasure of viewing us in light of His end goal.
He is SO certain of His own machinations, in fact, that He would dwell in us NOW, in these bodies of humiliation (that is — HE, the true El-Who-Suffices, makes Him spirit low into us NOW.)
He dwells in you (Rom. 8:9-14, 1 Cor. 3:16-23 — notice, if you look these up, that there is a pattern in each of these citations as well — an acknowledgement that we are temples of the living God, followed by the gift of SONSHIP and ALL.)
This is God’s allotment (Eph. 1:18.)
By dwelling in us, God begins giving His lowered Son ALL that He asked for.
He takes the lowest of us. The worst of us. The least of all saints. The greatest sinners. The most corruptible. The Saul. The Stephen. The Seth. The Amaris. The Priddy’s.
And makes the Paul. The Staint. The Crüsh. The Soulestial. The Zenders.
He takes the greatest in the body of Sin…
And gives them to Christ.
The ecclesia begins completing Christ.
And the Head is moved — seeing the subjection of the WORST at the hand of His Father.
If the WORST can now proclaim the sovereignty and authority of Christ (“Jesus is Master,”) from the BEGINNING to the END (ginomai, “BECOME” in the likeness of humanity, obedient unto death, EVEN death of the cross, now above every name,) then ANYONE can.
The Son’s death becomes vindicated.
Justified.
The Father gives His Son this gift; this affirmation. He says to His Son, “It’s okay, now. The worst is over. Everything is okay.”
And gives YOU to Him.
And Christ, our brother, happily joins His spirit with yours. He sees you, not as your flesh, but as your spirit, your crucified flesh disregarded, your life His own, and your end as His own.
You have all.
We are made low — if there is ANY consolation IN Christ, it is that we are MUTUALLY disposed in love.
Now we may look at all, and rest — not in their infirmities, but in the love of our Father, which bears with them in much patience, with a view to their end, which justifies the means.
They, too, will be Christ's own (Rom. 8:21, 1 Tim. 4:10.)
Life will be justified. (Rom. 5:18-19.)
All are conciliated. (2 Cor. 5:18-21.)
All will be reconciled. (Col. 1:15-20.)
All will be vivified. (1 Cor. 15:22-28.)
This will be through Christ — the complement of God. (1 Cor. 11:3-16.)
Thus through us — the complement of Christ. (Eph. 1:22-23.)
This is the point of Christ's existence prior to His physical birth -- portraying ("the Image") God's humility. To demonstrate that Christ's headship, Him being the Origin of the Creation of God, reflecting God's plan and purpose through Him, will not be repudiated forever.
If the WORST can now proclaim the sovereignty and authority of Christ ("Jesus is Master") from the BEGINNING to the END, then ANYONE can.
All will learn. All will acknowledge. The Son is affirmed, and God is happy.
Praise Yah.
